थायमस ग्रन्थि (Thymus Gland)
स्थिति (Position) - यह वक्षीय गुहा में हृदय से आगे, ट्रैकिया के इधर-उधर स्थित होती है और भ्रूण के तीसरे प्रसनीय क्लोम दरार से पैदा होती है। कुछ स्तनियों में यह जीवन पर्यन्त उपस्थित रहती है, लेकिन मनुष्य में यौवनावस्था के प्रारम्भ के बाद धीरे-धीरे छोटी होने लगती है और वृद्धावस्था तक लगभग लुप्त हो जाती है।संरचना (Structure) - यह लसीका ग्रन्थि के समान होती है, इसके बाहर संयोजी ऊतक की एक खोल पायी जाती है। यह एक गुलाबी, द्विपालिवत् चपटी ग्रन्थि है। इसकी पालियों में छोटे-छोटे पिण्ड पाये जाते हैं, जो एसीओलर ऊतकों में पड़े रहते हैं। पिण्डकों के चारों तरफ लिम्फोसाइट्स पाये जाते हैं।इस ग्रन्थि में कुल तीन हॉर्मोन थायमोसीन, थायमीन I और थायमीन II बनते हैं। ये लिम्फोसाइट का निर्माण करके प्रतिरक्षीय पदार्थों के संश्लेषण को प्रेरित करते हैं। इस प्रकार ये शरीर के सुरक्षा तन्त्र को स्थापित करने में मुख्य भूमिका निभाते हैं। चूँकि ये लैंगिक परिपक्वन के साथ समाप्त होने लगते हैं, इसी कारण यह माना जाता है कि ये वृद्धि एवं भिन्नन को नियन्त्रित करते हैं और गोनैडोट्रॉफिक को अवशोषित करके जनदों की वृद्धि को रोकते हैं।इसके हॉर्मोन्स की अधिकता से उपापचयी क्रियाओं में रुकावट आती है और जीव की मृत्यु भी हो सकती है। यदि बाल्यावस्था में ही इस ग्रन्थि को निकाल दिया जाय तो शरीर में वसा बनने लगती है और कंकाल के बनने में रुकावट आती है।थाइमस ग्रंथि
